ADVENT | PEACE

ADVENT | PEACE

NEXT Family,

I remember being in high school and college getting through finals week. I know the next few weeks can be filled with pressure, stress, and fear, but my prayer is that in the midst of all of it you would sense the Lord’s goodness and grace over your life. I will be praying for you guys.

Something to chew on and think about:

“God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which he must work. Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.”

Teaching Note’s

Throughout December we are going to recognize advent each week.

What is Advent?

The arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.

We are going to look at 4 different things that the arriving of Jesus has taught us.

HOPE | PEACE | JOY | LOVE

Remember the voice of God had been silent for 400 years Think about what the silent absence of God’s voice would do to you.

What questions would run through your mind?

Is God mad?

Why isn’t he speaking?

Did I do something wrong?

Am I good enough for Him?

Is God even real anymore?

These are questions that I imagine people were asking during the time frame that Jesus was born.

  • Story | I grew up going to something called “blockbuster” every week. I would always rent a Nintendo 64, but the highlight of going was getting to put a quarter in the gum-ball machine. I would put in my quarter and hope for my favorite color to come out. 9 out of 10 times I wouldn’t get the color I wanted.
  • It was a guessing game and it was usually disappointing.

This is how I grew up thinking about God. Sometimes he was happy… Sometimes he was mad.

I imagine these are still questions that most of us are wrestling with today.

We view God like a fairytale game of “he loves me, he loves me not”.

Could I suggest that when we do this we are actually declaring to God that what Jesus did on earth was not good enough.

Paul reminds us in Romans 5 that we no longer have to play this game anymore because we are at PEACE with God.

Lets open scripture:

Romans 5:1-11

1 Our faith in Jesus transfers God’s righteousness to us and he now declares us flawless in his eyes. This means we can now enjoy true and lasting peace with God, all because of what our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, has done for us.

And there is still much more to say of his unfailing love for us! For through the blood of Jesus we have heard the powerful declaration, “You are now righteous in my sight.” And because of the sacrifice of Jesus, you will never experience the wrath of God.

10 So if while we were still enemies, God fully reconciled us to himself through the death of his Son, then something greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, and because we share in his resurrection life, how much more we will be rescued from sin’s dominion!

This week we are going to look at PEACE.

Peace – freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility

Greek | eirḗnē – A state of national tranquility

It can also mean to joinfrom eirō, “to join, tie together into a whole“) properly, wholeness, i.e. when all essential parts are joined together; peace (God’s gift of wholeness).

This is not the peace of God that is talked about in Philippians. This is peace with God!

I would love to suggest that the reason most of us doubt God’s peace towards us is because we have not yet excepted the invitation to join together with him.

Example: (Make a pour over coffee)

I enjoy coffee everyday. To make coffee you need 2 things.

Water (hot) and Coffee beans (ground).

When this water hits the coffee beans, it will never be water again. It turns into a lovely cup of coffee.

God chose to restore PEACE to humanity by joining himself to us through his son.

Here is the catch… He always invites us and will never force us to be joined to him.

Paul reminds us of this beautiful reality:

And because of the sacrifice of Jesus, you will never experience the wrath of God.

10 So if while we were still enemies, God fully reconciled us to himself through the death of his Son, then something greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, and because we share in his resurrection life, how much more we will be rescued from sin’s dominion!

Today we observe PEACE. When we pray for peace we are actually declaring Jesus himself over whatever it is we want peace over.

Much like this cup of coffee cannot be coffee without water and coffee beans joining together, neither can you and I receive peace apart from joining with Jesus.

That’s my challenge to you this morning:

God see’s you this morning as righteous and flawless in his eyes because of what Jesus did. Nothing you did could earn that.

Accept the invitation of peace that God extends to you today.
